Maburaho(TV 2003-2004)

Written by

Overview

Hot on the heals of the Harry Potter craze, we have a few anime trying to cash in on the wizardry school phenomenon. When they start with the psychokinetic powers let me know...oh wait, there's Psychic Academy, terrible shame about that anime, but anyway.... This story is about ye ol typical-anime-spineless-wuse-with-lots-of-power(tm) who is going to wizarding school. He's bad at just about everything, except that he's supposedly descended from a long line of incredibly powerful wizards (and if you look closely, one of them is H. Potter...yeah right sure) which means he's got the genes to produce some of the most powerful wizards of all time. Enter 3 girls who are just the ones to cash in on this little treasure trove: The 'main' girl Yuuna, Kuriko the busty rich blonde, and Rin the traditional Japanese girl...who just happens to be a samurai type as well. There's a fourth, but...ehh.... Can we say typical harem anime? Sure we can.

DearS (TV, 2004)

Written by

Overview

In this typical shounen bit of teasing fanboy service; jerk, biggot, and nice guy (yes you read that right) Takeya Ikuhara comes across a girl by the road one day after school, clothed only in blanket. He saves her from being run over by a truck, only to find she's one of the almost legendary DearS, who crash landed on this world nearly a year before. She kisses his hands, and then his lips, promissing to serve him forever. There are several problems with this, as he soon discovers.

Akane Maniax (OVA, 2005)

Written by

Overview

After the end of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Akane is left in a rather bad mental funk she can't seem to shake. This is confused further by the arrival of Gouda Jouji, who professes his love for her, and it is through his unique perspective much of how he tries to bring her out of her pain and win her that this story is told.

Tenchi Muyo OVA 3 (TV, 2004-2005)

Written by

Overview

If you don't know this one by now, may the gods have mercy upon your soul. Anyway, Tenchi Muyo is about a faceless cypher, Tenchi Masaki (or is it Misaki? I always get those confused), who didn't start out that way, but draws a magical sword from a stone, freeing the demon Ryouko which causes no end of mischief to befall him in the form of several other girls in what is probably one of the first pure harem animes ever made.

Utawarerumono (TV, 2006)

Written by

Overview

As I mentioned in my first Dragon's Den article, there's been a recent trend of Eroge to Anime conversions coming out of Japan, and that they have, for the most part, been very good series. Today I'm taking a look at one of this summer's releases, which just wrapped up last week, Utawarerumono, or The One Being Sung. Uta follows the life of a man with amnesia and a silver, horned mask that he can not remove as he wakes up in the care of the village elder Tsusukuru, and her two granddaughters, Eruru and Aruru. It seems that Eruru found him laying unconscious in the forest after an earthquake, and brought him to her grandmother, who is a widely known healer. Needless to say, it doesn't take long for events to be set into motion that are sure to shatter that apparent peacefulness of their existence.

Zero no Tsukaima (TV, Season One, 2006, Nolen)

Written by

Overview

Zero no Tsukaima, or Zero's Familiar, is all about an inept magician in training and the familiar she summoned. Turns out the familiar she wound up summoned was actually a human being from 'our world.' Too bad on this world, Saito is just a commoner, which earns Zero a great deal of ridicule, and himself a lot of Zero's ire for being a human, and worse, a normal human at that...or is he?

Innocent Venus (TV, 2006)

Written by

Overview

It's been awhile since I took the time to really look at a Mecha series. Truth be told, Neon Genesis Evangelion rather turned me off to the genre after growing up with greats like Robotech and Go Lion. It's not that I didn't like a good Mecha story, just that I honestly didn't see much in the way of good Mecha stories out there. Enter Innocent Venus, a name that popped up on my fan sub RSS feeds one day. A quick look at AniDB didn't reveal much; just that it was about a post-apocalyptic world, and that there were, indeed, Mecha. I'll admit that I probably wouldn't have grabbed the first episode in light of that, except that a fair number of the series that I'd been watching were finishing up, and I needed something new to watch.
