Spice and Wolf (TV, 2008)

The way that I figure it, you can divide every season of anime into three sets of series. There's the Generics - the ones that are there every season, in some form. The series that are the same story, with a different name, in other words. Then there's the Brand Names - the series that make the season. Often these are sequels, or else eroge conversions, but they share a common trait with the Generics in that it's still stuff that you've seen before. Now, needless to say, I'm after the third group, the Wild Ideas... These are the series that try a really new spin on something. They might be based on a manga, or eroge - but not the sort of 'seen it before' material shared by the first two groups. It's hard to do, and be successful - the sad thing is, it seems like most viewers want either the Generics, or the Brand Names... In short, they want stuff that they're comfortable with. Get to the point, JC, I can hear you saying. Alright - it's this season's Wild Idea that I'm taking a look at today, Spice and Wolf.

Spice and Wolf Review

Hey, another review. This time it's a look at the Spice and Wolf anime series, one of the best (if not the best) series of the winter season. What happens when you take a shy, innocent little forest creature and take her out into the big world? I got no freaking clue, because Horo's not shy, and she's sure as hell not innocent. Grab some popcorn, sit back, and take a look at the review, will you? Already seen the series? So talk about it! CLOSED

H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ (TV, 2008)

Geeze... short season, wasn't it? Aside from Persona and one or two others, everything for the Winter 2008 season was a short thirteen episodes, and I'm left feeling a bit unfulfilled, honestly. But, alright, since it looks like I haven't got much choice, I suppose that I'd better take a look at a couple of the shows that just finished wrapping up. First up on my list is a little gem called H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~. Now, before I go much farther, I should mention that there's something about H2O that will either utterly turn you off, or draw you in like moth to flame. Part of the opening includes scenes of one of the main characters - a young girl - getting the tar beaten out of her by a pair of boys. It's not an accident - and not a case of metaphor. Stick with me here, I'm going to delve into it a bit shortly.

H2O Reviewed!

Well, it's the end of the season, and that means that it's time for new reviews from me. Yes, I have to actually dust off my keyboard and do some work, heh... That being the case, I thought that I'd start with perhaps the most controversial of the season, H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~. Now, this is a series that takes a little walk into the darker areas of human nature, of hatred and its power to consume long after the events that gave rise to it... Not sure what I'm talking about? Well, take a look at the review, and feel free to drop into the forums to discuss a little too. CLOSED Oh, and look for a few more reviews coming soon - lotta series wrapped, after all!

Spring 2008 Anime Preview

Spring has sprung, and with it a new season of anime. This season includes the third installment of Code Geass, and more of To Love-ru in the returning series. A classic gets an update with Macross. You'll get your fix of just plain freaking WIERD with Maid Guy... And let's have some fun with a poor little fox that's gender-challenged in Wagaya. All told, looks like an interesting season's shaping up. Click on the read more link for previews for this season's series, and just like last time, be warned - you need Flash, and the page is a bit heavy, because this time around there's twenty six (!) clips! Enjoy!

Welcome to the NHK & EVA Rebuild

So here we have one of the most interesting manga I've read in awhile, Welcome to the NHK, which seems to be all about the insanity that has infected damn near every walk of life in one way or another both blatently and subtly.

There's also a discussion thread over there on the message boards if you want to take a gander at that. CLOSED

Evangelion: Rebuild

January 23rd, I spotted this file on Tokyo Toshokan and downloaded it. While it is obviously a camrip, with sound miked from a theater, it is adequate to give a good idea of what they’ve done.

I watched the entire series in it’s original releases; fansubbed, DVD releases both subbed and dubbed, and the authorized US Broadcast on KTEH, so I have some ideas about the original content. This video is the first “movie” and covers the first arc of the TV series.

Night Wizard (TV, 2007)

After all the heavy romance, drama and tragedy-esque series that have popped up this season, I thought I'd take the time to look at something a bit easier on the emotional roller coaster - a more or less straight action/humor series by the name of Night Wizard. At first glance, the title seems like it'd tell you everything you need to know about it - there's gonna be magic, there's gonna be explosions, and it's gonna be good vs evil. Eh... not quite so fast, kids. It does have all those things in there, but as with all things that come with the night, there's a lot of shades of gray that pop up. Oh - watch out for falling men...

Night Wizard Review

So, what happens when you take a tabletop RPG and try to make an anime out of it?  Night Wizard, that's what.  This series takes you on a simple enough romp through the life of one Hiiragi Renji - or at least, his attempt to have a life in face of being one of the protectors of the Earth.  Take a look at the review to see what's up - aside from him, that is.  There's a discussion over at the forum too.
