Welcome to the NHK & EVA Rebuild

So here we have one of the most interesting manga I've read in awhile, Welcome to the NHK, which seems to be all about the insanity that has infected damn near every walk of life in one way or another both blatently and subtly.

There's also a discussion thread over there on the message boards if you want to take a gander at that. CLOSED

Thoughts on Evangelion: Rebuild

January 23rd, I spotted this file on Tokyo Toshokan and downloaded it. While it is obviously a camrip, with sound miked from a theater, it is adequate to give a good idea of what they’ve done.

I watched the entire series in it’s original releases; fansubbed, DVD releases both subbed and dubbed, and the authorized US Broadcast on KTEH, so I have some ideas about the original content. This video is the first “movie” and covers the first arc of the TV series.

WoU - Day 5: Gurren Lagann

We're coming up on the end of the Week of Updates fast, so let's hit a big one with today's addition: a review of Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann!  Guess what kiddies, you're on the train, and there's just no getting off once Kamina and crew get themselves chugging away.  But hey, with a bouncing conductor like Yoko to follow, who'd want to?  Just remember folks, keep your hands and feet inside the Ganmen at all times, and believe in the you who believes in... ah forget it, just read the review and see what's in store!

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (TV, 2007)

I've said before that generally, Mecha anime aren't really my niche. Now and then I see something that seems like it might be interesting, and take a look at it, but for the most part, I tend toward other genres. So, when Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann went past in my feeder, I didn't pay too much attention. It wasn't, in fact, until after four weeks of listening to Drakstern rave about the series in #TenchiFF that I finally took the time to see what was up. If you like your characters to be laid back, level headed... sane, you might as well stop reading now... Because sane is not a term that can be honestly applied to the better part of the cast of TTGL.

Furi Kuri Reviewed

I've added a new review for FLCL (Furi Kuri) in the Anime Reviews section. Watch out for Haruko, she likes to use human skulls for guitar-smashing practice.

Furi Kuri (OVA, 2000)

Somewhere out there is a little yellow Vespa scooter that's got more miles on it than the Starship Enterprise, and riding it is a madwoman who likes to do Hendrix impersonations on people's foreheads. If you're having trouble picturing the two together, don't worry, because I can almost promise you that the effect is intended - FLCL doesn't make sense until you've watched all the way through it at least three times - and then only if you're really, really paying attention. Despite numerous attempts by friends to get me to watch FLCL, and the easy availability thanks to CN's surprisingly lightly edited version, I actually avoided watching Furi Kuri for a fair while. For all outward appearances, after all, it was in the same category of 'humor' as shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Home Movies, Southpark - indeed, FLCL even has a few scenes that directly mime Southpark's 'animation' - and so on. When I finally DID get around to watching, though, I was pleasantly surprised.
