Befriendings are coming to you!

When dealing with dark magical girls, it's best to notice their sad, sad eyes. Wanting to hold them and tell them it's alright is perfectly natural, and one should do this at every opportunity. Typically, despite their very desperate need for somebody to love, one needs to beat the living daylights out of them for the lesson to sink in; after which you have your very own devoted life long minion you can hug and squeeze and...

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (TV,2004)

Overview

Been awhile since I've been able to do something like this. May as well make the most of it. Imagine if you will a guy with one of the worst voices you could possibly imagine getting all genki and hyped up in a little moe girl context. Alternately, if the first cannot be conjured into your psyche, imagine it's Frank Welker's rendition of Megatron or Peter Cullen's rendition of Venger, just for the right amount of mental scarring. Possibly Darth Vader, but I'm not sure he can handle much more wusification after what Lucas pulled on him.

Now...let us begin.

Change 123 (Manga, 2005)

Overview

I... have nothing to say.

Motoko is a sweet girl – quiet, shy, and socially inept, but still sweet. She tries not to attract too much attention to herself, which is tough when you're a pretty little thing with glasses and a rack that'd qualify you for entry into the Dead or Alive tournament. On the other hand, I wouldn't worry about her too much if she did take part in that particular competition... You see, Motoko has not one, but three adoptive fathers, each one of which specializes in a particular form of combat, and each one of them put Motoko through their own, intensive form of training. Well, that's all well and good, but there's one tiny little problem... Motoko's mind took a three for one split, and she developed three separate personalities to deal with them! Thus begins Change 123...

Kyrie has a problem. It's not that he's human, although he's a human in a world ruled by beastmen where humans are slaves or worse. It's not that he's posing as a beastman in order to find work, though that's where his problem met him. It's not even that he's a pretty nice guy... though if he wasn't, his problem might not have been his problem. No, poor, hapless Kyrie's problem isn't all those things – it's a woman named Morte that's just walked into the tavern where he works... A woman who's made it her personal mission to make sure that the world comes to an end, post haste. And unfortunately for Kyrie and a little teddy bear named Toppi, thanks to a little misunderstanding, everybody thinks that they're with her, members of the World Destruction Committee...

Natsume Yuujinchou (TV, 2008)

Overview

Takashi and Nyanco-Sensei

Life has an unpleasant way of punishing people for being special in some way. How often in school was the quiet, really smart kid in your class also the favored target for the school bullies because they wouldn't fight back? Or the girl with braces teased and made fun of? Natsume Yuujinchou is about a young man who is special in an unusual way. He can see and talk to the many, many spirits that wander around, invisible to everybody but those with great spiritual power. Of course, as we've already pointed out, life has a way of punishing you when you're special, and so not only has nobody ever believed him, he's been labeled as the strange child, the liar, and bounced around from family member to family member after his parents died. By the time we meet him, he's a quiet, shut-off and somewhat cynical young man – until he finds an unusual book in the belongings of his grandmother when they're delivered to him. A book of names.

Clannad (TV, 2007)

Overview

You're invited!

Every now and then, a series comes along that you just know is going to be special. I can name classics like Ah! My Goddess!, Record of Lodoss Wars, and Onegai Teacher. For more recent examples, how about the two ef series and Wolf and Spice? Now, if you're paying attention, you're going to notice that all of these have a common thread through them – they're all, to some extent, romance stories. As a rule, I find that the more a story focuses on character relationships – as romance stories by very nature must – the better the series is. So with that in mind, I present to you a new entry to these special series, Clannad.

Tetsuwan Birdy: Decode (TV, 2008)

Overview

One could certainly say that Tsutomu is falling for Birdy...

It’s a rough life, being a high school student in Japan.  I mean, with the unnerving frequency of unpleasant things we anime fans witness happening in schools, I don’t know that I’d ever want to set foot within the educational boundaries of the Japanese school system.  With all the super powers, tsundere female martial arts masters, random evil guys plotting to take over the world or at least get their last test scores upgraded a bit – and don’t forget the alien teachers - it could be a rather unhealthy proposition.  Especially when the teacher’s little sister shows up.  Unfortunately for Tsutomu Senkawa, school grounds aren’t the only dangerous places out there, so when he indulges in his hobby of exploring abandoned buildings, only to find out that the building isn’t as empty as it first appeared...  Well, let’s take a look at Tetsuwan Birdy: Decode, and find out what happened.

Allison & Lilia (TV, 2008)

Overview

Every once in awhile, I find myself looking for something a bit lighter in nature than my usual tastes when it comes to anime. Now, considering that I've found my tastes running from being oddly entertained by Jane & the Dragon all the way to Zenescape's Grimm Fairy Tales and Return to Wonderland series – which is a long way of saying really fucked up shit – that might not be saying very much. Anybody that can swing from the insulin attack inducing brain-numbing mindless teach the kiddies morals that is Jane & the Dragon to "let's take McFarlane's Alice and make it look like a positive place to put those kiddies" Return to Wonderland is already bucking for a section 8. That aside, when I caught the first episode of Allison & Lillia and saw a fairly harmless series foundation, I figured it'd do for a light hearted series to watch in a season with Macross Frontier and Golgo 13.
