Murder Princess (OVA, 2007)

Overview

Let's take the time to tell a little fairy tale, shall we? Once upon a time, there was a little castle in a little country, which was under attack by an evil scientist with two cute, pint-sized robots. The country's princess was able to escape, though, and went running away into the forest at the insistence of her guardians. The princess ran as hard as she could, until she came upon something wicked in the forest, but a hero arrived just in time to save her... or she would have, if the princess hadn't panicked and stumbled, knocking them both off a cliff. The end. Well, almost, anyway, because it wouldn't be much of a series if Murder Princess had ended in the first fifteen minutes.

Tenchi Muyo OVA 3 (TV, 2004-2005)

Overview

If you don't know this one by now, may the gods have mercy upon your soul. Anyway, Tenchi Muyo is about a faceless cypher, Tenchi Masaki (or is it Misaki? I always get those confused), who didn't start out that way, but draws a magical sword from a stone, freeing the demon Ryouko which causes no end of mischief to befall him in the form of several other girls in what is probably one of the first pure harem animes ever made.

Itsudatte My Santa (OVA, 2005)

Overview

I suppose that I should have known not to expect much when I found out the translated name of Itsudatte My Santa - 'Always My Santa'. Come to think of it, I probably should have realized that the moment I saw the word 'Santa' in the title. But for some foolish reason, it never quite registered in the back of my mind what I was in for, as I patiently waited for the fansubbed two OVA series to download. It might have been that I'd had a long day when I finally sat down to watch it, or it might have been some long buried reflex watch response to anything related to Santa Claus left behind from when I was a kid. Whatever it was, I found myself watching this OVA, and wincing almost the entire way through it.

Hellsing Ultimate (OVA, 2006)

Overview

There are those out there that have been waiting for this since the moment the Hellsing TV series started. Something was always a bit off, after all, even in the very beginning of the show. It seemed as though it was following the manga, but the wary had reason for caution, as came quite clear by the end of the fourth episode. Despite the fact that Hellsing TV was good, it was considered so bad by series creator Kohta Hirano that he refused to have anything further to do with it. Thus was born Hellsing Ultimate, an OVA series in which Hirano took far more personal involvement to ensure that it stayed true to the manga storyline. And y'know what? He did a kickass job of it.

Ushio & Tora (OVA, 1987)

Overview

I dunno if anybody else has ever heard of this title, but it's one of the old crop of anime, released before CN and even Sci-Fi Saturday Anime even existed. It dates back to the same era as Record of Lodoss Wars and Bubblegum Crisis, and it shows in the animation. Compared to today's stuff, it's rough, some might even go so far as to say gritty. Personally, I rather like that; it adds a sort of more realistic effect to the animation than today's computer generated animation does. Anyway, Ushio and Tora revolves about a young man who finds a tiger-like demon pinned to the wall of his family shrine's basement...

Dragon Pink (OVA, 1994)

Overview

Well ok, so maybe it's not exactly the newest series out there, but then, I'm old enough to remember when 'Anime' consisted of Speed Racer, Macross, and Go Lion, so I'm entitled to enjoy something that predates today's unending flood of wham-bam-ship'em-man formula hentai. Yes, that's right kiddies, Dragon Pink is an H-Anime, care of the once infamous SoftCell Pictures studio. It came - pardon the expression - before CG replaced hand drawn cels, and before nine out of ten H-anime featured what amounted to the exact same cast with different faces and different camera angles. Now, I realize that that's just the nature of adult entertainment, but it's nice to note that it doesn't always have to be true - and that there can, indeed, be more to adult material than, well... smut.
